A long-distance moving checklist for the journey and both homes

Choose the household transport plan early and get its timing, services and responsibilities in writing. Confirm how inventory, pickup and delivery updates will be handled. Ask what cannot be carried and how to report damage or missing items.

Work backward from the pickup date, not only the date you hope to settle in. Set earlier deadlines for decluttering, supplies, non-essential packing and access confirmation so the final week remains available for essentials and unexpected issues.

Long-distance transport adds handling and time in transit. Use sturdy boxes, close them securely and avoid empty space that lets contents shift. Number each box and record its room and contents so you can identify missing or priority items quickly.

Photograph valuable belongings before packing and keep your own copy of the inventory. Back up computers, protect fragile items on every side and follow the carrier’s instructions for disassembled furniture and restricted materials.

Create a travel plan for every person, pet and vehicle instead of treating it as part of the shipment. Allow realistic driving time and breaks, then keep reservation details and emergency contacts available offline.

Pack personal luggage for the journey plus several extra days. Include medicines, chargers, clothing, toiletries, food or pet supplies, children’s comfort items and anything required for work or school.

Before unloading, inspect the destination for access or condition issues. Direct labeled boxes to their rooms, check the inventory and examine fragile or high-value items. Record any concern through the carrier’s stated process.
