Eight weeks before: decide, declutter and compare
Start by deciding how the move will work. Compare moving companies or rental vehicles, estimate your total cost and identify anything that needs special handling. If you rent, review your lease and give notice according to its terms. If you own your home, keep closing dates and access arrangements visible alongside the moving timeline.
Declutter before buying supplies. Sort one room at a time into keep, donate, sell and discard groups. Reducing volume now means fewer boxes, less loading time and a more manageable new home.
Build the budget
List transport, supplies, cleaning, travel, deposits, storage and a contingency amount. Track estimates and actual costs separately.
Create an inventory
Photograph valuable items and note furniture dimensions. Check that large pieces fit through doors, hallways and stairwells at both homes.
